I started riding in to work with a little trepidation since a thunder-storm had just passed. But I was brave. What could happen? After all, in earlier years, I have already dislocated both shoulders and cracked a few ribs sliding off because of the rain. I guess there was always the possibility of running over another diamond python, but they are hardly going to venture out in the rain. Everything went well until I was close to work, near Yorks Hollow. There was plenty of water across the bike track, so I didn’t see the creature until the last second. At first I thought it was a thick snake, but on closer inspection, I discovered an eel! Perhaps is was a Short Finned Eel (Anguilla australis). Fortunately, I missed him/her and got to work in one piece.
