Machynlleth is a little village close to the coast half-way up the western coastline of Wales. The River Dyfi runs fast and shallow here. The weather has been variable with short bursts of torrential rain (even hail) followed by brilliant sunshine. We took the bus up to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) about three miles up an adjoining valley. The centre has been established for over thirty years and has been instrumental in showcasing alternative energy systems and sustainable living. In the past few years it has taken on a more educational role, but the exhibits were still pretty interesting. We walked back, but almost got stranded since the only foot-bridge was closed for maintenance. Fortunately, the workers let us step through where they were laying new decking. It would have been very dangerous to cross over the road-bridge because it is narrow, has no footpath and the traffic is crazy.
