Last night a feral cat got into our chicken coop and killed our top hen, Theodora (named after the Byzantine Empress Theodora). She’s the precocious one on the right in the sunbathing picture above. We’d seen the cat around the backyard over the last few days, but thought the hens were safe in their run. Apparently, the cat got over the fence by climbing some trees. The two remaining hens (Julia named after Julius Caesar’s sister and Faustina named after Empress Faustina the Younger) were a bit unsettled today, but laid their eggs nevertheless. A trap was set, but feral cats are hard to catch.
