I spotted this orchid (Dipodium variegatum) on the main Seven Hills Circuit track just off Day’s Hill in the Seven Hills Reserve. There were plenty of specimens growing right next to the track where there was deep mulch and shade (as well as moisture from recent rain). It is an interesting as well as attractive plant. Since it is leafless, it doesn’t rely on photosynthesis, rather it engages in parasitism of (or symbiotic with) a fungus of the Russula genus. Because of this close association, this species may be difficult to propagate commercially.
